About Fundación Calicanto
Fundación Calicanto is a Panamanian NGO founded in 1997, who began working towards restoring the architectural heritage of Casco Viejo, but later on it became evident that the efforts were displacing members of the community because their socio-economic status had not provided them the skills or resources to participate in the neighborhood’s revitalization. People from el Casco is also part of this site’s heritage, so Calicanto’s mission changed to include protecting the human and architectural heritage through social, educational, cultural and conservation programs and actions.
One of those programs is Enlaces, created by Analida Galindo, a renowned Panamanian Contemporary Dancer. Enlaces is a preventive after school program for at risk children from 9 to 13 years old from the vulnerable neighborhoods of El Chorrillo, Santa Ana and San Felipe, that uses performing arts and the use of corporal expression as a tool to stimulate development, acquire skills that go beyond mobility to communication and creativity, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
In Enlaces Contemporary Dance is the main focus and every afternoon after they finish their day in school, they come to the Enlaces classroom and receive a nutritious lunch before spending their afternoon in dance, theater, ballet, or gymnastics. They also receive personalized academic tutoring, focusing in math, language arts and English. By combining all of these activities, our program contributes to their personal, artistic and academic formation, all at once.
They also receive workshops and counseling sessions by the program’s psychologist, in order to maintain a closer and more effective intervention, and to catalyze positive changes in their behavior.
Aside of the 20 children that come daily to our premises, Enlaces gives other more than 90 kids the opportunity to experiment the benefits of performing arts in their own environment, through sessions in the community’s schools, neighbor NGOs, and parks and plazas in El Chorrillo and surrounding neighborhoods.
Parents’ and teachers’ support is also a key element for the success of this program, for that reason, Enlacesalso offers training and activities for them in order to involve them in the children’s healthy development.
Enlaces has begun making deep changes in our children’s lives. The core of our program is to reinforce their belief that they can grow into great leaders, to reinforce their self esteem through creation and self expression and to make a positive impact in their community.
