The framework of this spine tingler is unusual: Arthur Kipps, a retired lawyer, hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to his family and friends a terrifying story that has long troubled him. His story begins as he is summoned to attend the funeral of a client, Mrs Alice Drablow, an elderly recluse who resided in a far flung part of Britain. There he catches sight of the woman in black, a young woman dressed all in black with a wasted face, the mere mention of whom terrifies the local towns people. Arthur continues on to Eel Marsh House, the home of Mrs. Drablow to gather her relevant legal documents.
Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur makes his way to the home, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. There he again sees the young woman dressed all in black at the graveyard and he is convinced that she is what they call a Ghost, but he is unconvinced that the woman is a danger to him. As he enters the house a creeping sense of unease takes hold of Arthur and this feeling is deepened even more by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black…and the terrible events surrounding her presence.
